completion of AHRC Grant: Shaun the sheep immersive Experience

AHRC UK-China Research-Industry Creative Partnership Grant

We are happy to share that our final report for the "Shaun the Sheep: Immersive Experience" project (2020-23) is now complete and published. This project was supported by the AHRC UK-China Research-Industry Creative Partnership scheme and was led by Prof Richard Koeck (UoL) in partnership with Prof Sylvia Pan (Goldsmiths), our technology partner FeedAR, a team of experts from the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), who contributed to the project with their knowledge of the cultural context, animation and immersive technology and the highly skilled team at Aardman, which included Lorna Probert, Chloe Barraclough, Ngaio Harding-Hill, and Gav Strange.

The aim of the project was to deliver a world-first in research innovation (i.e. technical, methodological, creative application) that will enable the development of a prototype Shaun the Sheep visitor experience as a non-linear, real-time, responsive, spatially immersive family visitor experience in Shanghai. The prototype we set out to develop was unique in the sense that it can be enjoyed by families of all ages, who will be able to interact directly with a Shaun the Sheep story in real time without the need for headsets, gloves or personal devices.  The new story developed by Aardman as part of the project is a true Shaun the Sheep adventure whilst recognising China's cultural context and values.

The final report can be downloaded below.
